I'd love for people to comment and tell me how wrong I am! Change my mind ... I dare you
2000 - The Marshall Mathers LP Eminem
I mean, I get this is obvious but come on, just come on. Nothing ever sounded so ... so ...
2001 - Gorillaz Gorillaz
When I was little my Dad took it upon himself to give me a 'musical education', and of course Blur were part of that - alongside Dylan, Madness, Squeeze and a few others who joined the motley crew of my childhood soundtrack; so when Damon Albarn reemerged with his fictional, pet project Gorrilaz of course I was played the album on repeat. However let it be said Humanz and The Now Now ... I couldn't even pretend to like them for old times sake. Just don't.. I tried..
2002 - Songs About Jane Maroon 5
As first albums go Maroon 5 pretty much nailed it and paved that way for very successful career. Their music has been a constant progression through genres (currently settled in chart topping pop hits). And Sunday Morning remains my favourite song to eat breakfast to.
2003 - The Lord Of The Rings: Return of the King Howard Shore
YOU SHALL NOT PAAASSSSSS.........
2004 - American Idiot Green Day
Story Time: Green Day spent most of 2002 recording the unreleased album Cigarettes and Valentines. But why is that album unreleased? Short story is, it got stolen. No copies. Re-record it? Never. They chose to write a completely new album. And that's how American Idiot was born.
Some of my favourite memories of the album are driving fast past stone henge in the back of my parents car, screaming along to Jesus of Suburbia. Perfect.
2005 - Two Shoes The Cat Empire
We put this album on when driving back from Summer Solstice at Stone henge. We hadn't slept. It kept us awake as we had to sing every lyric and dance whilst driving.
2006 - Back To Black Amy Winehouse
Memory: Sitting at the back of Charlie's garden on the wooden bit with Anthony, listening to Eva singing Back to Black.
2007 - For Emma, Forever Ago Bon Iver
I've never heard a more beautiful or tragic phrase than Skinny Love.
2008 - We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. Jason Mraz
Apology: Sorry to all the people at school who heard me sing I'm Yours over and over and over and over and over and over and over ... I only knew four chords!
2009 - Ocean Eyes Owl City
Thirteen year old me thought she was really cool listening to such an odd album hahahaha
2010 - Teenage Dream Katy Perry
Benny Benny Benny Fucking Blanco . Benny Benny Benny Benny ... Okay fine!! Max too ... 'rolls eyes'
2011 - + Ed Sheeran
Every person who owns a Little Martin guitar will try and tell you they wanted it for the size and the "convenience". I promise you now, they lied hahahah. It's because of this album, come on people don't even try and pretend.
2012 - It's Got Four Sad Songs On It BTW Lewis Watson
Ok so yes this is an EP but Lewis Watson was one of my first obsessions and this EP made me want to write my own songs. Thanks Mr. Watson, appreciate it!
2013 - What. Bo Burnham
"You can eat pork cause why the fuck would I give a shit?
I created the universe think I'm drawing the line at he fucking deli aisle?"
2014 - The Balcony Catfish and the Bottlemen
Memory: Sitting in Lewis' first year room and me telling him I'd heard of Catfish and the Bottlemen to try and make him think I was cooler than I actually was ...
2015 - Oh Wonder Oh Wonder
Memory: COVERD IN GRAVY!!!!!
2016 - The Ride Catfish and the Bottlemen
Memory: Leaning against a train window somewhere in Europe blasting this album on repeat.

albums

2017 - Reputation Taylor Swift
When I first listened to this I remember putting on headphones in bed and looking out of my window at Rosebank (pretending to write my dissertation). Every time I heard a song I turned up the volume more each time. I know this is bad but honestly I just wanted to be consumed by every song. Perfection.
2018 - Malibu Nights Lany
I don't actually know why I connect so much with this album yet. And I don't think I'll know until a couple months time when I've played it to death.
So there it is. A list of albums that have defined my life so far. Because that's what music can do. It can change your mood like the flick of a switch, it can hug you and say 'don't worry things will work out' or it can remind you of a memory 12 years ago and of people who you once knew.
And frankly ... I think that's pretty incredible.
